Yes, I think $40 would be nice of you to offer. A shop would charge much more but this guy doesn't have the overhead of a shop. ANd he probably thinks he's doing you a favor. $40 sounds like a good amount to me.

Ask him what the charge is . If it's more than you can afford , pay $40 & pay the rest later . If it's less than $40 - give him the $40 anyway with appreciation.
At a shop this altenator replacement would cost $250 plus tax since they charge top retail for the part and book time on the labor.
Don't let him in your house unless your husband is home or unless he absolutely needs to enter (bathroom /phone use).
Certain jobs are fine for backyard mechanics but they do not have many of the tools required or even the skills for the tasks at hand. Altenators , brakes , and tune-ups are generally fine jobs for a mechanic without the backing of a shop but there is no guarentees.

I hope that fixes it, but if your battery is over 4 years old, your going to need a new battery real soon. An old battery can put an undue load on any alternator, so it is money well spent to protect the alternator.

If $40.00 is all you can afford, pay him the $40.00. You'd pay a mechanic at a dealer about $125.00 for labor alone. Heck, if he's a nice guy, don't be surprised if you offer him the $40.00 and he tells you to keep it -- I've worked on cars for friends and colleagues and didn't charge them for it. It's called being a good neighbor, you know?

My husband does car work for people, and I think you should pay around $15-$20 per hour. That is around average.

Depends on what kind of truck. If its easy to get to, $40 is good.

I'm sure there was a price set before he began. If he refuses to accept any money, cook him a nice dinner or something.

It's better than a shop, but you should do it yourself, it's only 2 bolts and plug the wires in

Yes that's fair, have him check your belt as well. He can replc. it as well if it's worn at the same time.
