Well polar compounds will dissolve in polar solutions. The same goes with non polar compounds and non polar solutions. So you see if you had a polar compound and a non polar solution (like oil and water) the two will not dissolve together to make a uniform solution.

"Likes dissolves likes" is golden rule in solvent selection , this rule mean that polar solvents dissolved polar solutes, organic solvents dissolved organic materials, and so on, for example , water is a polar solvent it is a good solvent for salts, which also polar ,acetone org inc solvent is a good solvent for dyes , benzene is a good solvent for PVC
