Here's a few suggestions:
1. Change the air filter.
2. Do a complete tuneup (spark plugs, filters, etc.)
3. Check the vacuum lines and replace any that are cracked or leaking.
Is the "Check Engine Light" lit? If so, the car should be connected to a scanning device to get the error code. This code will tell you a lot about what the problem is and may point to exactly the defective part. The above items I mention are all easy to do without a lot of tools or background.

Try this - may or may not work.
Turn key to accessories / light position
press brake pedal, shift into neutral
start engine, allow to idle, rev a little, let it idle again & move into drive.

my guess is low idle due to a dirty throttle body.. clean it and it shall idle... IMO
great test is if you put your foot barely on the gas while putting in reverse and it doesn't kill

Check your idle, poss. low idle. It can be adjusted by turning a screw.
