Hello dear!
Great Choice!
Well, Crete is considerably a large islands and can offer choices to all tastes!
You can stay in two or three different hotels (in case you stay for many days) and discover most beauties of the island of Zeus!
I would not miss:
Knossos and Heraclion museum
Gramvousa (island) and Bali
Elaphonissos and Phalaserna
Walk through the Samaria Gorge
Visit some monasteries and downtown of the cities.
Visit Psilorites and Preveli
Dicteon Andron
Agios Nickolaos, SPinalonga, Elounta
Ierapetra, Sitia, Vai, Itanos, Zakros, ...

Crete is in Greece , first of all.
Crete is a big island so it has a lot of places to visit and it depends on what you are looking for.
If you are looking for relaxing or for nihgtlife or for archeology or all those together or whatever, there is a place for everything.You have just to decide what do you need and then you choose the place you are going to visit!

Crete is a nice place and of course it is part of Greece.
But I believe that it is not the best choice for you...
I think that the best choice for a couple at the late 40's is Santorini, a really romantic and peaceful place.

Mid summer is very hot everywhere.
If interest in culture & real Greek spirit, try Peloponneses, but you need weeks.
If lesser time available, Crete is a good alternative.. try Agios Nicolaos area in the east..

you may consider to go to Archanes, a small quiet village, 15 miles from Heraklion, in the middle of the vineyards and olive trees and close to 'Knossos"
Can recommend to stay in Villa Archanes, a small privately owned apt.complex with private pool and lovely owners.
