Alan, I could hug you! Thank you for the kind words about my beloved country. You are so right. Although The United States Of America is plagued by many social and political ills currently, we are still a great nation in which to live. We are the first to offer support and care when another country falls victim to either natural disaster, i.e; earthquake, tsunami, etc., or is attacked unprovoked and unjustly. Yet, even while our military/civilian countrymen are volunteering their services for rescue and help on any given land, the people of that land are standing nearby burning our flag and calling us "the great satan". It has always been thus for many generations, but of late it has increased greatly. Maybe we should close off our wheat bins, medicine chest and medical providers and cash flow. I would personally love to be able to afford a one-way plane ticket to Siberia, Pnom-Penh, Kabul, or any city in China, Ethiopia, etc, to any American citizen who constantly berates this country and thinks it is soooo horrible living here. Further, President George W. Bush is getting way too much credit for wrong-doing. He is indeed a good man with a good heart, strong spirit, and is more intelligent than people are willing to acknowledge. It is just too much fun for the drive-by media and other wack liberals to submarine him and make him the fall guy. He is a figurehead in place to be a common voice for the people, like any other democracy. He can do little more than the Senate allows. God bless him, God bless you for your kind words, and God bless America!

I have to say that on the whole the Americans that I have met when travelling have been nice people and I've enjoyed their company on holiday.Admittedly I have only visited New York, San Francisco and Boston on holiday, and know that they tend to be a little more free thinking in their views, but I met some very intelligent articulate people who were honest about the problems they had at home and abroad, in just the same way I'm honest about our problems in Britain at home and abroad. I think the issue is that Bush is terrible and that American foreign policy is the most poorly judged thing on the face of the planet. I'm sure when Clinton was in nobody was quite so mean to the Americans because the leader they had chosen was moderate, articulate, and politically adept, I don't think that opinion changed even after he was caught with his pants down.
This fella is something else though, he represents the darker side of American political culture that whilst Clinton was there we could dismiss as a couple of ultra right wing conservative Christian fundimentalist who were so backward as to still teach their kids that we were all made out of mud, that all gays are evil, that anyone who is foreign is automatically inferior. Now America has a president who seems to embody all these things. With Clinton you felt that he was trying to make the world a better place and with Bush, you can't help but feel he's going to take us all to hell in a handcart.
I am naturally right wing in my economics and my politics and Bush scares me, so is it any wonder that all the tree huggers and the liberals on this planet are screaming out against Bush and his nonsense?
Where the knock on effect occurs is the fact that to criticise the president in America has always seemed to me to be judged by Armericans themeselves as being unpatriotic in some way, which is just bizzare, because the beautiful thing about democracy is that our leaders should be criticised and held to account, that is the most patriotic thing that you can do. I think that is it is this perception by the outside world and Europeans in particular that makes Europeans anti American as they think that the whole country thinks the same way as Bush.
It is this percieved ignorance, superiority, and lack of respect for any culture outside of their own that makes people react negatively towards the USA and with two more years to go of Bush and the disaster that is the middle east, its only going to get worse. Still if I was a yank I wouldn't give up all hope, being British is as unpopular at the moment, not only are we percieved to be incahoots with the USA, but thanks to a rather large empire we once had we're still being blamed for most of the ills in the developing world!

I think it's because we have most pervasive influence of all countries currently. It's an easy target. Why fix your life when you can blame someone else for your problems?
That said, the gov't is currently really pissing me off, I despise the current administration, they are an embarrassment and a danger to the planet, but I still like the country.

Because we live in the land of the FREE. Lots of countries I believe are jealous of our lifestyles, cause we have so much and live so freely. We are friendly and always willing to help out others in need and also to kick some butt when it calls for it.

i totally agree, however there are some (i see loads in the carribean on holiday) that treat the locals like slaves! i mean, they might get paid to do everything for you but at least they (americans) could ask nicely for something and say thankyou, its common courtesy! on the other hand the americans i've met whilst in the usa are always really nice, it depends on your experience of them i suppose.

I don't blame US or UK. May be those people are jealous? Usually people who can't take responsibilities and stand up for themselves blame others. Who cares what anyone blames .. we know what we are.
