Actually, there wasn't anything greater before.

The inventor of sliced bread (name escapes me) was a shameless self promoter, and went around saying

"This is the greatest thing since I invented sliced bread."

Of course, this earned him the immediate distain of anyone he spoke to, however, for some odd reason the phrase managed to pick up.
