Is everything written, are we not in control of our next breath? Is the past a determining factor for what will be certain in the next life, if there is such thing.

This is really a question about predestination, right?
The thing with predestination is that it takes away all initiative. To give a far-out example, if you are predestined to win a Nobel Peace Prize, does that mean you don't have to work for it? That it will automatically come to you?
To suppose that means that life is nothing but a movie script, and we all have to follow our little roles with no deviations.
There are endless examples of people who have overcome crippling odds to achieve something wonderful. And other examples of people who have everything and simply squander it.
Michael J. Fox's new book is a wonderful example of this. He feels he didn't really appreciate life until he got Parkinson's disease. Most people would have seen that as the end of the line, but for him, it was a time to turn his life around, start to think seriously about who he was and what he was doing, and he now feels the past ten years, living with Parkinson's, have been the best of his life.
You could say he was destined to play this role, but that denigrates his struggle, and the attempt to find out who he really was, and I believe we are all given the inherent potential to improve the quality of our lives, if not in a financial sense, certainly in a moral sense, in a compassionate sense, and in the sense of being aware just how wonderful life is.
Didn't mean to go on at such length, but that's the way I see it.

The linear
He ran around
naked,
naked he ran
around
He hollered
... screamed:
"Flat, flat, flat!"
Clarifying
to puzzled faces:
"The Earth ... the earth ... the earth!"
Effectuating Doppler
as he ran faster
than most could follow
Into an apartment building
Up to its roof
To jump,
bounce,
get up,
grin
and run
hollering and screaming
those very words
that none believed
After only three days
he was kindly captured
and offered
a trip around the world -
in a space-shuttle
He looked his eyes out
Could not believe
Then admitting at last
that instead of flat
the Earth was round
They brought him back
to capturing spot
Dressed to kill
... Other routines he had
seemed harder to break
He runs no more
Did one last jump
Did not bounce
Yet left us
with a puzzling smile

You are asking about karma. Some philosophies hold that we are born with certain karmic energy that leads to certain events throughout our lives. Free will is the ability to accept or refuse this energy. If there is something you really WANT to do, that's probably karma. Free will is NOT doing it.

Actually for it to be a question you'd have to phrase it "Was that supposed to happen?" Otherwise, it's just a statement.
