First, you need a broadband connection. (DSL or Cable in most cases - Satelite(sp?) links can have unacceptable lag times).

Then, yes all of the other companies mentioned work swimmingly. One that was left out of the list however, was Vonage. (www.vonage.com) which can give you not only PC to phone, but phone to phone via the internet. They charge like $20 a month and that's it. long distance, voice mail, caller id, blah blah, all included. (If you have both phone and PC to phone via I-net there is a nominal additional fee - I think it was $5 a month) There are other comanies that provide that service (VOIP) but that is the one I used. Also - Skype, while free until the end of the year, will ultimately become a charging service as well.

Unless I'm much mistaken Skype & the like are free for pc to pc calls only. You can call landlines more cheaply, but not for free.

skype is only free computer to computer and you have to buy credit if you want to talk to a land line and its 1pence a minute
compared to bt .
