This is the first time I have grown yellow tomatoes, Cherry ones at that, and I really don't know how to tell if they are ripe. They seem to tast good when I pick them when they are sort of a yellow orange, but if I miss them they just seem to turn redder and still taste good. When I have bought them they have been more of a yellow but these don't seem to ever get there just go from green to that orange color.

the color will be deeper shade from when they start coloring in. if you can't tell when they are ready by the color change, then try to pick it. if it comes of the vine easily then it is ripe. if you have to give it too hard of a tug, then it is not ready to be off the vine yet.

Sit down by your plants & have one, that is the best way to eat them, they always taste so much better that way, our yellow tomatoes are doing the best this year, we have loads of them, I have dried a bunch of them to have to cook with this winter, pink ones, too. I can't have the red ones. After I dry them I grind them in food processer, put them in freezer bag and boy do they ever make good seasoning this winter, it only takes a big tablespoon to get a really good flavor. Try it you might like it.

There's really no 'right answer" to your question. The best way is using your own sense of taste. You've tried them at various stages, so decide which one you like best. The main reason to grow your own veggies is for the superior taste, so pick your tomatoes when they are the tastiest according to your own taste buds.

Apparently, you need to use your sniffer!

From PCC Natural Markets:

"When buying tomatoes, choose those that smell like tomatoes; unripe ones have no scent."

Hope that helps -- me, I just munch 'em up, yum!!

if you can't tell by the color go by how soft they are when you squeeze them. they should feel like the one in the store when they are ready.
