It's probably either the monitor going out or a video card/adapter problem.

1. check connections
2. If connections are fine, test on another computer if available
3. Try to shut off all screensavers, hibernation etc, it can do strange things some times

Sounds like your monitor is dying. Check the connections and re-boot.
