The word "barrow" dates back to Middle English and means a cart for carrying small loads. A wheelbarrow is such a cart, but it has only one wheel. It's pronounced wheel BARR-oh. The confusion is understandable as they sound very similar.
I'm from the great state of Maine.

You know? I know in my heart it is wheelbarrow, and I would write it as wheelbarrow, but I am from Idaho and most of us say wheelbarrel.

The correct term is "wheelbarrow" (or wheel-barrow) and is pronounced WHEEL-bare-oh, at least that's how it is in Canada. I have heard "wheel-bare-uh", but that's a "hill-billy" dialect like "agin" for "again".
