they are found in a wide area of southeast asia, living in shallow streams and rice paddies (preferential to the most stagnant waters). they are thought to originate from Thailand (former Siam) which is why they are known as Siamese fighting fish. professional breeders most commonly import wild stocks from Thailand but they are also often imported from South Vietnam, Malaysia, and Cambodia.

Thailand in shallow ponds, rice paddies, and slow moving streams. In nature their water is often stagnate (not moving), and thus very poor in oxygen. As a result bettas get oxygen from he surface. Modern store bettas are referred to as Betta Splendens and have an amazing range of color and fin shape. Other species/breeds exist in nature and captivity, but have less color , and shorter fins. Many betta in Thailand are still bred for their fighting ability.

The name "Siamese Fighting Fish" tells us where they are from originally. Siam was a southeast Asian country which is now called Thailand.
Commonly called a betta (pronounced bet-tah, not bay-tah).

They came from rice paddies originally. The ones with larger bodies and short fins are the original "fighting fish."
