Why do people vote single issue and ignore the other issues that may affect them more directly? That is why might someone vote for a candidate who supports an issue that is not going to be able to be changed while they may cut funding for a program this person needs? Why are these people so uninformed and why do they misunderstand the total issue? How can they be so ignorant? The truth is easy to find.

Short sightedness. And maybe they have ADHD and can only concentrate on one issue at a time!

Single issue voters (also known as zealots or Flat Earth Party members or Know Nothing Party Members) will be the death of the USA political system.

That's actually pretty easy to answer. Here are two examples:

Ellen is 65 years old, a mother and a grandmother. She is well past her time to have children. However, she is one hundred percent against abortion. She feels that it is morally disgusting and that people are killing children. She finds a canidate who is for lowering prescription costs (she has a lot) and setting up better programs for the elderly. These are all things that benefit her and will later in life come in handy. Ellen is really confused, she knows that this canidate would be the best suited for her needs. However, due to her moral disgust over abortion it's an easy decision for her. Do I save money and does my life become easier? Or do I go with my conscience. SHe decides that she will vote for the other guy.

My husband is in the Army and I tend to vote to the right. However, I am pro choice and socially liberal. But I do have a very "right" side to me on a lot of other issues. Basically, I can vote either way. Twelve years from now my husband retires from the Army. A canidate comes up on the potium and I like him. I agree with everything that he says. Untill he starts talking about how he is against a pay increase for the military. Or that he doesn't promote any military programs that would benefit servicemen/women and their families. WHile the other canidate is throwing around programs and raises. I know how much help those families need. I would probably decide on the other guy.

Because that takes time. Most don't want to take the time to find out about the candidates. So they base all their opinions on what they see in the media. And the He said/She said game politicians play. That and a lot of people just vote for a name. It doesn't matter what issues they agree with, or what their policies are or what they stand for ... what matters is hmmm i recognize that name OK I'll vote for him/her.
Then they turn around and complain cause they don't like the way things are being ran. Very scary and really no way to stop people from being that way.

People are stupid, lazy, and shortsighted...that's why we continue to have the same problems all the time. If I were benevolent dictator, I'd have an intelligence test to qualify to vote.

It also amazes me that people expend so much effort arguing over who will be president and almost none over local politics...most especially the mundane offices like school boards and commisioners. These are the people that are going to have the most impact on the individual voter. The president of the USA has made almost no impact on my personal life...but the city council sure has!
