For a 1998 Dodge Caravan; front brakes put on last year, 20,000 miles since then. Now they are making a scraping/squeaking sound.

The correct answer is that the life span of brakes varies greatly depending on how they're used, so there is no hard and fast number of miles. From what you've said, my educated guess is that you are due, and probably overdue. The scraping/squeaking noises tell me that you should have the brakes inspected post haste. Running too long on worn pads is dangerous and will ruin your rotors.

Hope this helped.

Mileage on brakes will vary from driver to driver, depending on what kind of driving they do.....ie: city or highway. Some people also ride their brakes a lot, which of course wears them out quicker.

The scraping sound you're hearing is a little steel spring which is released once your pads have worn down far enough to release it, which is to signal that your pads need to be replaced.

Take it to a shop for replacement as soon as you can for safety's sake.

How long they last depends on how well you drive. For example, people that ride the breaks a lot will need their brakes replaced much sooner then someone who hardly touches the brakes at all. I make it a rule to have my brakes replaced atleast once a year no matter what.

easily If I have been you i does no longer be finding at a mercedes, they at the instant are not very stable. And its somewhat the way you handle the motor vehicle! My 2000 Chevy tahoe has 210,000 unique miles and it hasn't broken down as quickly as and continues to be going solid! in case you handle the motor vehicle solid it somewhat is going to return the kindness! make certain you sometimes exchange the oil, coolant, brakes, and air clear out and ever a hundred,000 miles you decide on a verify up.

Today's brake pads are made with different percentages of semi-metalic particles in them. So, depending on the manufacturer's of the pad -especially in the aftermarket venue- they will have different lengths in their lives. Also, if you've changed your driving habits, routes, driver pads will last at diff. rated. For ex. if you now drive hills and stop and go they will not last you as long.

Just pull each wheel off and look at how much meat is on them. If you have less than 1.5mm of thickness, than change 'em.
It does not take a rocket scientist to look at brake pad thickness.

It depends on what type of driving you do. City driving wears out brakes faster.
