My son has asked me to save the top of the pineapple so he can grow another one. I made sure I cut it at its base, with no fruit attached. So what do I do now? Being a bromilead, if the bottom leaved get wet, will it rot? Are there any additives I need to put into the water to aid rooting?

How To Grow A Pineapple

Pineapple is one of the world's most unique and exotic tropical fruits, yet it is possible to grow it in a temperate zone under controlled conditions; with the most difficult part of the process just getting it rooted. Although you may not be able to grow as large a plant as is grown on a plantation in Hawaii, the following information should enable you to grow a healthy, attractive pineapple for your home. And it makes a fun family project for the kids!
With some patience, you can even grow a new pineapple from this plant. It takes about two to three years, though, and even then some plants are difficult to get to produce new fruit. However, I've searched the web and have provided below the best techniques for improving your odds of harvesting a ripe & delicious pineapple that will fill your house with its aroma. To make full-sized pineapples, the plant will ultimately need to get about six feet across and six feet tall. But, you can grow it as an interesting indoor plant and even get it to produce fruit (albeit small fruit) without letting it take over the living room :-)

i have a pineapple growing as we speak. i cut the top off. leaving some fruit (about 1-2inches). the fruit will provide nutrients to the plant until it has a root system to supply itself (like an umbilical cord). then stick the thing in a pot with some potting soil. cover the fruit base completely. keep the soil moist, and in bright light. some leaves will wither while it gets established, but won't harm the plant. no rooting hormone or anything fancier than dirt and water needed. you could fertilize if you wanted.

my step mom grew one this way. it took 5 year for hers to have it's first fruit. if you are doing this to grow fruit, it is easier to buy an already established plant. but if it is just for a project, it is fun and very easy, you could even let your son do it himself.

have fun and good luck

Here's what I did,and I have a healthy Pineapple plant with a Pineapple growing on it!:
Cut top of Pineapple.
Leave top in a warm place till it completely dries out,it will look dead.
Plant in good quality houseplant compost.Water, very little.
Cover with a polythene bag, secure bottom.
Place in a warm position.
Do not water till soil dries completely. This is very important. Remember a Pineapple is a tropical plant so therefore requires little water. It will take about three weeks, then you should see shoots appear from bottom of cutting.Once established place your plant in a warm bright spot, occasionally misting the air around plant, to increase humidity! Good luck.

chrisg7989 has you on the spectacular music, yet use a miles better pot once you initiate. i exploit a fifteen inch pot for all of my pineapples. ascertain you fertilize your pineapple. i exploit tomato nutrients for mine, blended double-capability, each and every 2 weeks. And, notwithstanding the fruit will in all probability be smaller it relatively is going to unquestionably style extra advantageous when you consider which you are able to enable it ripen before harvesting; those bought in shops are picked eco-friendly to stand up to transport. notwithstanding it relatively is a protracted look ahead to the plant to offer fruit you are able to hurry it alongside. as quickly as the plant is a minimum of four ft for the era of you are able to rigidity it to bloom with the aid of reducing an apple into slices and putting the slices between the leaves. conceal the plant with a plastic bag for a week, then come across. (This desires to be accomplished in the autumn, September or October) here spring the plant will bloom and strengthen a sparkling pineapple. Having ripe pineapple is very well worth the wait in case you like an suited tasting fruit. stable luck and experience!
