Octane number of octane rating is a measure of the autoignition resistance of gasoline (petrol) and other fuels used in spark-ignition internal combustion engines.

It is definated, that iso-octane has an octane number 100 and n-heptane has an octane number 0.

Higher octane ratings correlate to higher activation energies. Activation energy is the amount of energy necessary to start a chemical reaction.

Octane numbers used by scienstists vary from those used in fuel tanks.

octane number means the gasoline quality
most of gasolins in the market are blind of different hydrocarbons so if they want to know the quality of this gasoline they compare with octane, as pure octane 100% is the best
pure octane is less knocking inside the engine

I knew some Octanes who lived down the street a few years ago. Their number was 1233, Mine is 1260--I live on a corner lot, you see. The Octanes' number was important to them because they would not have received mail otherwise other than General Delivery at the post office.
