I say: all three.
Remember the past and use everything you've experienced, good or bad, to your advantage: remember your mistakes so as to be able to avoid repearting them, and remember your accomplishments to help you stay on course and to be proud of yourself. Don't dwell on your mistakes or opportunities you might have missed out on; instead, learn to USE that experience to your advantage.
Focus on the present, try to do stuff right, get past obstacles, work hard and play hard, so as to keep on evolving by gaining life experience.
Think about the future and the goals you've set for yourself, be ready for both the good times and the bad times. Keep fighting for what you really want and be ready for setbacks, accidents and unpleasant surprises -- because they WILL come -- but don't forget that you must also know how to appreciate everything good that will come as it comes.
Life is not a simple matter. It can be awesome, or it can be utter crap, but it is NEVER simple.
Act accordingly.

I believe past problems should be used only as a learning experience. How can something in the past be resolved? Let in remain where it belongs.
If you can make amends for hurting someone in the past, that would be a different thing. I would be all for that.
Work on problems that are present, if possible. I try to think positive and take life one day at a time. Focus on the problem honestly, and don't let anger interfere. It will only cause a problem to grow larger. I don't believe it is good to carry problems into the future.
It seems that planning for the future is a good idea, but just remember, something is always going to come up to interfere with the best layed plans. Just be ready and know that is just how life is...nothing personal.

Though I don't fully agree with the first answer posted. it is a pretty good answer.
The human race is made of three types of people. Past; present; and future oriented.
My dad was past oriented. if we got a really nice October day, he would tell us about something that happened exactly 50 years earlier on that date.
Past oriented people politically are called reactionaries, and never want anything to change, no matter how obvious the need for change might be.
Present oriented people are called liberals. I call them the Me! Me! Me! Now! Now! Now! folks. If it feels good, do it, they chant. Also, Seize the Day!
Their whole viewpoint is to do what seems correct right at this moment, and don't even think what it means for tomorrow. Sex today, and if you get pregnant, someone anyone is supposed to take care of you. If two men are in love, the law is supposed to recognize their love as the same as any other love.
Future oriented people are called conservatives. While we know we must work on current problems, we believe we are supposed to also consider the future implications of anything we do. Our view of marriage laws include that it means to the future of our society, not just whether Adam and Steve really love each other.
One reason the Repubicans in office are taking heat is because they have forgotten the future. Everyone worries about Iraq, but Bush signed in the largest tax-and-spend bill in the history of this nation. (Prescription coverage for elders, which most of us did not need or want.)
For that, I expect one more Dem takeover then after the cut-and-run Dems get a city nuked by terrorists because of their appeasement techniques, the Dems will be gone for generations.

A perfect living being analyses all the three elements. The Past, the Present and the Future are equally important for a person, if he/she is to be succesfull in life. Take science for example, scientists always look back to the past for inspirations and study past inventions to make a better and more efficient thing, solution etc..
They are studying at present, the old problems and difficulties which people faced and are creating something better for the future.
So, there you go. One of the greatest reasons why Scientists are categorized as the perfect being. They keep in mind the Past, the Present and the Future.

think about the present and make plans for the future at the same time. If you are currently solving past problems, then those are still present issues.

Start from the premis that the past no longer exists, it has been and gone. Neither does the future exist as it is not yet here. Live for the present be true to yourself and to others. What goes around does come around so a good present should ensure a good future.

Resolve any fault that you might have in the past by apologizing then go on to the future. That way you will not feel guilty about anything that may have been your fault in the future and you can get on with life without looking back.
