People like to read everything. You should write what YOU'RE interested in and what YOU know.

I'd also suggest that popularity is more about an effective structure and style, less about content. If you can write well, people will want to read you.

I used to only read steinbeck, ayn rand, et al. Never thought I'd ever want to read sci-fiction, but somebody suggested Card's "Enders Game" and followed that series with fervor--tried other sci-fi books--still didn't take. And then there are odd books (to me anyway) that I come across like 'the curious incident of the dog at night time' i thoroughly enjoyed that

...my point is, i think i don't look so much at the subjects but a certain style of writing that seems original or avante-garde

Personally, I love Latin American authors because of the passion they put into their writing. You can practically touch, taste, feel, smell and see the words. I find a lot of Brit and American lit so bland and emotionless (well maybe except for Edgar Allan Poe who is one of my all-time favorites).

Try looking for a compilation of short works, such as Hammock Beneath the Mangoes or the Vintage Book of Latin American Literature (not quite sure about the title but something like that).

I like Ana Lydia Vega, Carlos Fuentes, Murilo Rubiao, Gabriel Garcia Marquez just to name a few. Pablo Neruda I believe is one of the best poets in the world.

I also enjoyed reading Anais Nin's diaries, erotica compliations by Susie Bright. Golden's 'Memoirs of a Geisha' was easy to read and very poetic. Evelyn Lau's 'Fresh Girls' was startingly candid. Her diary is worth devoting time as well.

I have read a short story by Haruki Murakami on the New Yorker and I think he is genius. I am currently reading Banana Yoshimoto's Kitchen/Moonlight Shadows but I would say pass on it...too obsessed about the weather changes in nature...yawn...

Personally, I like reading fiction novels. In general, people like to read many things. Stick with what you're good at. If you can write a good fictional story, go for it. If you are more of a poetic person, write an anthology of poems.

Fantasy novels like King Fortis the Brave, Harry Potter and Eragon are great!

For some reason, as humans, we like patterns.

we like the hero that has some form of being the underdog, and beating his foe. this does not have to be a literal sense of course:-)

also that little hint of romance is fun, but not overwhelming or most males will act like they want to be sick. there are so many possibilities!

I like to read mysterys and romance! You just can't beat a romance. But don't make a romance to mushy cause then it gets grose and people don't want to read it if it's mushy and gross. But don't make the mystery boring cause then nobody will want to read it. But DO NOT make it too scary cuase then people won't be able to sleep at night, just know where to draw the line. One last tip... add humor! :) Can't wait to read your book!
