I work at a fine dining restaurant and although most people know that the average tip is 20% i notice that foreign people, particulary Europeans, dont tip well at all. Do servers in those countries work for tips or do they have a higher hourly rate?
Please note that I am in no way trying to be ignorant to any ethnicity, I do however dislike bad tippers of any origin.

In Europe, you are charged a seating charge which covers the tip and cleaning linens etc. That's why they don't tip- but if you ask me they are being cheap because it is widely known that you tip in the USA.

I would tip between 15 - 20%, depending on service. If the service is very bad, I would give 10%, even though it is undeserved.

As for foreigners not tipping well, I am not aware of this. In fact, many tip over what's needed as they ar confused with the exchange rate. I don't think that there is a cultural issue here.

Ack, I remember that. I was a server for several years and I got to the point where I'd cringe at the sound of an accent. I was told that in Europe and Canada it is customary to tip 10%, but a lot of the time you don't even get that. Good luck and I wish no French people on you.

well...here in the philippines, most restaurants usually charge an additional 10% service charge + an additional 12%on tax, and 22% additional charge is high especially if you are in a high class restaurant.

i usually give tips of 10-20% depending on the service, but if the restaurant is already charging 10% for service charge, i give a lower tip...service charge=tip...right?? except of course the tip is optional to pay, unlike the service charge.

I think the standard tip is 15%. Higher for over and above.
Less for behavior that actually impacts the enjoyment of the meal.

You are right that European waiters don't get tips.

Well, I know in Germany they don't tip at all! Yes, in Germany people get a living wage for serving, and tipping is not a thing. It is like that in lots of places. We are the odd-balls with the paying less and tipping deal. In other places, they value serving people like any other job.

They may not be very familiar with the currency conversion. I don't have a lot of money and sometimes i don't tip very well it has nothing to do with the person i just don't have a lot to give soooo that be the case as well....

I tip everybody, but I do it because of my ego. It makes me feel good to give away money as if I don't need it so I give pretty good tips. I pay for everybody. Stay in school and you'll be throwing money away one day too.

There, in Europe, you get charged for a seat, so I guess they don't know. In other places, they usually just sit, pay for their food only, and leave. They don't know about tips.
