Or, if you are like me, an hour before the exam, you sit down with a cup of coffee, and read the newspaper, feeling very sumg because you have done all the work!!
Seriously, your approach to an exam is very important. I always took the view that before the exam I had zero points, so all I had to do was work towards a total.
A friend took the opposite view. He said you started with 100% and lost marks for everything you got wrong. I think that puts too much pressure on you.
Don't panick, sit quietly. DON'T try to learn anything, you will just get confused. Either go for a walk, or listen to music, or read something completely different.

I try to block out all the noise in the class room, and find/keep a focal point for my amind. If I find that at home or on personal time, music helps me be grounded, than I'll bring the music with me and only stop it just before the exam. Or, if I feel confident with a certain amount of knowldge, or topic (say a particular portion of the chapter being teested) I latch on to that feeling of confidence and spread it around, and reaffirm it to myself that "Yes, i know this, that, and yes, i am smart, I can think of this, that" and so on. See, I dont concnetrate on my weaknesses, but on my strengths. Weaknesses cause the fears, so strengths obliterate fears. In the middle of the exam, I stop myself whenever I get excited. If i have a question I dont know, I wont let my mind yell at me or get all hyper. I'll say "That's all right. Look at the question. What do you know in the question? What is familiar? What is certain about this information?" and so on, until I arrive at the best possible answer I can produce, and then just keep going.......
But there's never a way to totally avoid that fear!!! :P

What works for me:
Read thru your notes one more time...while eating a snickers bar!
The chocolate makes you feel good, the sugar give you a slight high, the protein in the nuts feed your brain and the fats make this last for 2 hours. This will support your brain during the test.
Another thing is to "KNOW" you will get in, and get out of the test. You must tell yourself that you have done all you could and trust yourself to pull thru. This will relax you. If this fails... visualize the tester with a dunce cap. Yes, because chances are very high, that in his/her school career, he/she has flunked a test or two.
Don't put so much emphasis on tests, it takes more than one to give you a grade. Also, many classes can be repeated...so
DON'T SWEAT IT!!!

You can write certain important stuff u would like to revise before exams on a piece of paper (like page numbers, topics, definitions etc) do this a few days before the exams when u have not started panicking, this will serve as a way you can efectively channelise your energy before exams when otherwise u will just panic and waste time and stress yourself.
and after a while just close your eyes and pray, think happy thoughts :-)
