There are several causes; thumb sucking for one, also kids who are born with allergies and have to breath through their mouths have protruding teeth because there's never been the pressure of the upper lip to shape them. One youngster I knew, for some unknown reason, would hold a wash rag between her front teeth and yank on it. It made her teeth terribly bucked. In short, the foundation for teeth in children is very pliable and can be influence by very small events.

Genetics mainly. Take a look at your parents teeth. My teeth are exactly like my dad's, didn't grow in straight and to much over crowding of the teeth.

my niece sucks her thumb, and her teeth are forming around her thumb. so she kind of looks a little buck toothed.
