How do I make a certain part of a picture a link, not the whole picture?

I'm trying to make an internet riddle trail, but before I start to put the work into it I would like to be sure that I will be able to do it.

It's called an image map. Say you want to take a picture of a dog and make it's nose a link but the rest of the body nothing. You place an image map in the HTML code (most packages will have awizard to do this for you though) and volia! image map with a link.

The only way I can think of is making new images out of the parts you want to be links, then reforming the picture by putting them all side-by-side in the HTML.

Instead of having

you would have

if image1 was the left side of the image and image2 was the right side.

it sounds like you probably have more than just 2 parts to the image, but the idea is sound as long as you make sure it doesn't wrap, therefore putting parts of the image on a different line than they should be. if you are making a grid of them, just put a
in before each row of images.

you can use your HtmL authoring app to make "hotspots" which are a map of coordinates to make multiple areas have links.
I use dreamweaver and make "image maps" to do that...
