Chicago is sooo beautifull, you have to be here and really see it, the lake shore right in downtown is unbeatable. And it's also one of the cleanest cities in US, never have the city clouded in smog.

I'm biased. But even if I didn't live in Chicago, I'd chose it over DC. Chicago is an absolutely beautiful place to live. You should spend a weekend in Chicago and make up your own mind. One of the biggest and newest attractions is Millennium Park, which is just north of Grant Park. Our mayor has done a wonderful job beautifying the city. Everywhere you look, you'll see fresh flower (not just downtown), clean streets, and happy people.
One of the other answers addresses the wonderful historic architecture and the great neighborhoods. There's so much to offer that I won't even try.
I like to think of Chicago as a cleaner, friendlier version of New York (Manhattan in particular). Whatever interests you have, Chicago can meet your needs. Come and see for yourself.

Chicago kicks DC's azz. World class restaurants (Wolfgang puck, Rick Bayless and Charlie Trotter all have places here), a leader in architechture (Frank Lloyd Wright, Luis Sullivan, Mies Van der Rohe all made their most important work here), TWO baseball teams (Don't like the NL? Wait a week and watch an AL team), a beach that pretty much stretches from one end of the city to the other. Major shopping (Nike built their first flagship store here, and Apple has put one of their few shops here as well). Public transportation that runs all night long (try getting home from that party at 4 a.m. in D.C. .. get your cab money ready). Every ethnicity in the world (there's a Greektown, a Chinatown, a Germantown, an Italian village, Indian communities, Polish communities, Jewish communites, Irish communities, etc.). Every major band in the world has to pass through here. About 50 bazsillion music venues so there's a place to hear live music seven nights a week. In the summer there's a cool streetfair everyweekend, there's the air show coming up with cool jets buzzing the whole city, etc. etc etc...
And D.C?... whatever...

I have lived in Washington and Chicago, and they are very similar in some ways.
Both have good public transportation
Both have developing downtown areas that used to be lousy.
Chicago has more area and diversity of neighborhoods. Washington is fairly condensed this way. I think you could explore Chicago for years and not see everything. Washington is fairly explored in months.
Chicago has a great lakefront, Washington has the Potomac, but I wouldn;t call it great. Sitting by the Potomac in Georgetown is fun tho.
I would Choose San Francisco over these anyway.

I haven't been to DC but I will tell you that Chicago is a cool town. There's a lot going on in the city, great public transportation system, and a lot of diversity. Summers are hot and humid but slightly cooler the closer you are to the lake... Winters are cold and dry- slightly warmer the closer you are to the lake = ). The winds aren't nearly as bad as everyone says...
I just moved from Chicago to Saint Louis and am having a tough time adjusting to the smaller city...
Population Demographics (extremely generalized): North end is snooty white folks, west end has a large latino population, south end has a large African American population with a bunch of Polish thrown in for good measure all around... In general the further out into the suburbs you go the whiter it gets...

I have been to DC and I prefer Chicago. The only thing I like better in DC is the round road set up. You almost cannot go wrong. I prefer Chicago bcause it is so diverse, there is plenty to do in a vaireity of cultural arenas, stores are plentiful and the hours are good, the cost of living is better here.

Chicago is great, much better than boring Washington D.C. There is so much to do in Chicago and the extreme weather is great. Chicago also has an amazing transportation system and countless restaurants and attractions.

Chicago!
The neighborhoods are great. Good Transportation system. Lively city. Local government works well while DC local government does not work well.
Great things to do. It is central to other U. S cities. Much more diversified economy.
Excellent place to find good entertainment and dining.

If you like extremely frigid weather, then Chicago is the best place. If you like scorching, muggy weather, then Chicago is the best place. I personally don't like Chicago. I live about 30 minutes outside of it and try to stay away. The people are rude, but I have to admit that they have some pretty cool places to dine. And unless you live in the wealthier neighborhoods, then people litter like it's their personal garbage can. I hate that.
