From what it sounds like your koi may have some type of bacterial fungal infection or what is known as body or scale rot. I some cases its treatable if its quickly caught, but for the most part its eating away at your fish and should be taken care of right away. first of all if you have more than one fish in the tank and they arent showing signs of it take the infected koi out and quarintine it. i suggest a hospital tank depending on how big it is. you can treat the rest of the tank with forms of medicine, maracyn 2 or maricide are just two. when you treat the tank make sure your filter pad is not in the filter, as this will filter out the medicine. Keep in mind that it doesnt go away overnight it may take some time. Once it has gone away there is going to be some exposed flesh so you will ned to treat the koi for that too. melafix or pimafix may help. you also may want to know that this is very common and that youre going to need to do water changes if you have them in a tank. if they are in a pond i wouldnt worry too much about infecting the other fish but to be safe i would still treat the rest of the fish also. now it is not uncommon for fish to have tumors or cysts either , if that is the case there really isnt much you can do just make sure if it opens up that you treat it with melafix for the open sore, i do know of some people who will have the problem removed , but that is very expensive. i dont know how big your tank or pond is but you need to know that koi are very dirty fish and need lots of water , rule of thumb, about 2 gallons of water for every inch of fish you have....example, a 4-5 inch koi needs about 8-10 gallons of water just for that one fish. hope everything works out koi are beautiful fish and are very expensive when they get larger, also they are fun to look at.

It is Koi. No, Koi do not shed. Only reptiles do. Take him to a petstore or just face the fact that he has a pasrasite. All my Koi died in less then two weeks. If only one of your fish has that problem, remove it from all the others, or it will spread and the other fish will get it too.

Well if your fish is coy then he'd probably shed it in a private space (joking). Maybe you should talk to a fish expert at a pet store and find out what advice they have.

as far as i know no fish sheds its skin, sounds like a parasite or a fungas infection. they some times get damaged on there sides through spawning. add a bit of salt to your pond and it should go in a wk or 2.

your fish most likely has a parasite or infection. fish do lose and replace their scales regularly, but if its from a particular area all at once, you should look into getting some of those medicine drops for your tank. good luck to your poor fishy!

no, only reptiles do that. a fish doesnt need to shed its skin because it is under water all the time and its skin doesnt get dry

Please go to this website for your koi......something is bad wrong
www.koivet.com...........I also hope they're in a pond and if so...this will probably begin to happen to the others if you don't start treating them NOW...I hope it's not already too late...and it's not natural for them to lose their scales but if the water is healthy they will grow back in time.
