I don't think either one is "gayer" than the other, or GAY at all. If by gay you mean joyful, or homosexual, it makes no difference as neither definition would apply here.
Also, I don't think it has anything to do with geography, but more so a scene that people like and want to fit into. Personally, I think people can dig what they dig without changing who they really are, but some people just aren't secure enough to go about it that way.
Further to that, WHO CARES!?
