I know that too much is bad for you and causes liver damage etc. But iv heard alot of people say that a small amount of alcohol, such as a glass of red wine a day wine can actually improve life expectancy. What do you think? Also what would you're opinion be if one of your friends/collegues decided not to drink on a night out? Would you think they were boring?

I grew up in an alcoholic family so, yes, too much alcohol is bad for you and those around you. However, wine helps a heavy meal to digest and instead of having that heavy bloated feeling, you can enjoy eating the meal and the evening afterward. And there are some schools of thought that believe the high heart attack rates in North America would be lowered if we drank more red wine like they do in Europe. But remember they're talking about a couple of glasses a day with meals.

How much someone drinks or doesn't drink on a night out is up to the individual. Anyone who criticizes you for drinking ginger ale while they drink vodka is not your friend. The choice of what goes into your mouth is yours and yours only.

I've had a lot of great nights out not drinking because I was the designated driver. Actually, I remember a lot more when I don't drink. These days everyone should have a designated driver when your friends get together and go out...it's not like a big sacrifice or anything. I've heard that 1 small glass of red wine is good for you..but not a bottle.

"A GLASS OF RED WINE, REALLY"!!!??? I don't think that is a small amount of Alcohol, Dude. Don't bite the idea that Alcohol can really improve life expectancy but rather helps improve health in some aspects categorically IF and only IF Alcohol is taken into moderation (i.e. one or two shots of red wine before bedtime). If one of your friends do not drink on your night out then try giving him a soda or milk. If he resist yet put it in a bottle feeder. He might enjoy sucking.

Who cares if someone chooses not to drink, that is their choice. But I do agree that enjoying alcohol and a drink is perfectly ok. Like a glass of red wine with a nice steak dinner is wonderful, not a bottle though. One should enjoy alcohol and partying every now and then is fine too. Partying each night, then there is a problem.

Some people have addictive personality they have to be careful. But in my opinion, married to an alcoholic; who has been sober for 4 years. You need to be able to put your drink down at the right time. I remember when we would go out to the bar it would drive him crazy to see me take a couple of sip and then not want that beer. I knew my limit. Oh I won't say that I don't get drunk, because I do. RIGHT TIME RIGHT PLACE and not every weekend or just at home. Planned event, My birthday, a night with the girls, pool night when I have a ride home and don't have to work in the morning. I have gone out many times and had a great time with my friends and not Had one sip of alcohol.

Just about anything is good in moderation.

A better burden can no man bear
on the way than his mother wit:
and no worse provision can he carry with him
than too deep a draught of ale.
Havamal 11

Less good than they say for the sons of men
is the drinking oft of ale:
for the more they drink, the less can they think
and keep a watch o'er their wits.
Havamal 12

A bird of Unmindfulness flutters o'er ale feasts,
wiling away men's wits:
with the feathers of that fowl I was fettered once
in the garths of Gunnlos below.
Havamal 13

Drunk was I then, I was over drunk
in that crafty Jötun's court.
But best is an ale feast when man is able
to call back his wits at once.
Havamal 14

A fool will gape when he goes to a friend,
and mumble only, or mope;
but pass him the ale cup and all in a moment
his inner idiot is shown.

Well, that is true, it does cause liver damage, therefore, if you drank a glass of wine every day for the srest of your life, wouldnt that be too much also? Yes. I personally don't believe in drinking period, I'm a Christian. And, if they decide not to drink, good for them. That doesn't make them boring in the least. My friends and I don't drink and we have great times.

I don't know, maybe the glass of wine a day thing works, maybe it doesn't. I wouldn't care if someone didn't drink on a night out. My boyfriend doesn't drink and I love him the same.

I lived with two alcoholics and too much is too much. while pregnant with my 4th child I was told to drink one glass of wine while relaxing in the tub every night. This was to keep me relaxed enough to not go into labor. As for going out with someone who doesn't want to indulge then that's ok with me. Sometimes I go out and don't drink either.

One glass of red wine or two per day has beneficial effects. It also helps (if you don't like wine) a small amount of whiskey or cognac after dinner before going to bed (emphasis on "small"). However, red wine is better.
