My laptop works fine, but I cna't get my adapter to charge when its plugged in. The adapter also gets very hot as soon as its plugged in. Could it be something in the laptop itself???

You might have a bad battery or AC adapter. Usually when you plug in an AC adapter software on your laptop will indicate if it is plugged in.

To check click on Start > Control Panel > Power Options and select the Power Meter tab.

It could be either the adpter itself is bad or it could be the battery.
Form what you've said about it getting hot immediately it sounds lke there's a short in either the adapter or the battery.

Try plugging in the adapter WITHOUT connecting it to the laptop, *IF* it gets hot immediately then the adpter is bad. *IF* it only get's hot when plugged into the laptop then it's either the battery or the voltage regulator circuitry in the laptop
