Dells service and price are good, but that is because the parts tehy use in the computers are very cheap. Dells are a love or hate thing most people who know about computers will swear against them yet you will also have alot of home users who love them.

I personally would recommend HP or Acer. Acer makes good cheap computers, but they also make most of the parts in house. HP has good service and usually uses good parts, better than dells. Compaq is now owned by HP so you can buy a Compaq computer and get the quality of HP without the name.

I'm assuming you are just an average home user. You should get a Dell.

I deal with home computers all the time. There are other good computers but you can't match Dell's service. Even if you have problems, if you get their service plans (comes with one year free) they will replace or fix it if ANYTHING breaks. The three times I've sent computers in to be fixed, they were back within 5 days.

As far as performance, Dell's seem to run very good. Rarely have I had a problem with a Dell PC.
I also am forced to work on Compaq HP. Terrible! Don't get a Compaq whatever you do.

Price. You can't beat Dell's prices. Compare the same specs at some place like Best Buy and they don't even come close. Dell has a new special about every week. The only way to beat Dell pricing and quality is to build your own PC, but I doubt you're planning to do that if you asked this question.

Custom builds are the best.

Every company makes computers, and uses similar parts.
Higher end computers (Like Alienware) are just more
higher-end parts (which can fail just the same) and they charge
higher and more outrageous prices.

If you are wanting a higher end machine for gaming, do some research on the web on how to put together your own PC. There are TONS of tutorials out there.

If you are tight on money and only have a few hundred bucks, this may not be the way to go.

But if you are looking to spend $1000 to $1600 on a computer, put in your own parts and get a computer that is actually powerful and will do what you want it to do.

Apple.does, by a long shot. But they are really expensive. Microsoft can ship out a good Windows PC for about 500-700 dollars *Dell's and hp's.. etc..* but an Apple Mac, which is quite expensive if money is an issue, can last you a while, can run windows, and isn't a virus magnet. I have a hp running windows, and I didn't pay much for it and it's doing a good job so I can't complain, but my next desktop home computer will be a mac.

I have previously owned a Hewlett Packard and an IBM, but I now have a Sony Vaio desktop with two hard disk drives and I love it. It's by far the best computer I have ever owned. I recently bought a Dell laptop and so far I haven't had any problems with it. Unless I custom build my next desktop, I will definately buy another Sony Vaio.

I have a Dell E1505 laptop and its great. The best one that i have had yet, and its gotten great reviews by almost everyone, PCmag and such. Dell's have great computers and excellent service. Obviously Apple's are extremely nice but way too expensive. You can get the same processing speed and hardware in a dell for about 1000 dollars less than an apple.

I have two computers.

Desktop: HP moniter and Compaq PC. I love them and they work amazing. Never a problem, lots of memory, everything I would need on it, always works. Just an awesome computer.

My favorite computer however is my laptop. Toshiba Satellite. Memory, wireless internet, many ports, all the programs I need, easy to use, easy to carry, small, works perfect.

I recommend both.

Compaq is said to use Digital co. technology. Dell sells the most and I have one. Stay with pentium no matter what. Macintosh and IBM are not universally compatable leaving two choises.

I build my own. The best home computer is the one you build yourself. You can customize it however you want and tailor it to your own needs. Plus it's as upgradeable as you want it to be. The downside is there's no tech support or warranty on the PC, just on the parts.

The best computer is the computer which you assembled by parts, choosing the best compatible devices, periperals, boards nad processor. That will be the best computer you can have.
