Trionyx or soft shelled turtle a re completley aquatic and only come ashore to lay their eggs in the dry season. They are carnivourus and will eat almost any flesh. If you are getting a small one to start feed on frozen blood worm or lance fish.
If it is quite large (8" to 10") you can feed it on fish and chicken filleted and cleaned., Take care as these are not handable turtles, its neck is as long as its back and it will bite at the first opportunity. Also you will need some form of heat in the aquarium and a good filter. These have to well anchored because the turtle will dig and move them about all the time. I have one that is over 20 years old and eats every thing I give him.

In the wild, Trionyx Ferox turtles inhabit all types of waters and waterways, from streams and rivers to lakes ponds and sloughs. They spend most of their time in the water or buried in the substrate at the bottom. They burrow into the mud or sand and extend their long neck to the surface for air or ambush passing fish from hiding. They bask on the banks of their water homes but rarely if ever on logs, rocks or each other (unlike many of our harder shelled buddies!). They can move extremely quickly in water or on land. In fact, they are probably the fastest turtles on land. They eat just about anything you find in the water, including but not limited to: fish, snails, insects, amphibians, carrion, crayfish and some plant material. They are very active and fun to watch in aquariums, but they really need a lot of room if you are going to keep one indoors or out.

What Steve above says is good advice.

I'll have to add that if your turtle does not like his aquarium, he can and will climb out. Keep the water clean, remove feces promptly, do partial water changes, rinse out the flitering material often (you are going to need an oversized power filter for this).

i really don't understand why people buy these pets without looking into them first, even when i was looking for a 3rd dog i checked his rottweiler breed out ,books, breeders sites etc temperament, common illnesses, all the stuff that goes with the type of breed.
its common sense to most people so they kind of know what to expect.
