Human beings tend to repeat behaviors that they learn from parents, friends and relatives, and they tend to like things categorized. These two factors combine to create stereotypical behaviors and to force us to use them as a shorthand for categorizing people we meet.

The fact that many stereotypes are true is less important than that we tend to use them in categorizing people.
