we saw some quite small about 2 inches long little fish, they were sort of a greyish colour and looked a bit like they had a couple of frills on there faces(one on each side). we tryed to catch one to have a closer look, but they were too fast for us! Any ideas?

Sounds like a blenny

There are several species that it might have been. Have a look at these links. See if anything looks like the fish you saw. The first link is for the Devon Wildlife trust, but there is only one type of fish pictured.

Unsure from the description but I'm replying just in case this migt be a Weaver fish, which would also fit the above description.

Weaver fish tend to live under the rocks in rock pools and if you go crabbing or similar will dart out and try and grab the bait! They also lie on the sand in the bottom.

The problem with Weaver fish is that they have spines which inject a poison if you stand on it, or catch it and prick yourself on it. You won't die but it is supposedly very very VERY painful.

Hopefully it is a blenny but please be careful if you try to catch it without being sure.

Probably a Blenny or a Gobi. I used to see them in Devon rock pools.

at a guess bully heads,we used to catch them in grimsby docks years ago but the mature ones which grow up to 6"in lenght.
