Dear member,

During a thunderstorm you're quite alright as long as you have a UPS or APC Backup battery unit surge protection. There's always a slim chance of these protection failing thus your computer is fried due to a spike or surge in power. If you know your up-time is good during storms in your area then it's ok to stay on. If you know your area blacks-out a whole lot during these times then it is best to stay off.

Kind Regards,
Ben

As long as there is no physical connection between your laptop and any wiring it is at no risk.

However, your DSL or cable modem and wireless router are all at risk! One close hit and they'll be fried.
