Who ever said it wasn't?
It's in the Olympics and everything. I didn't know there was any debate.

I often wonder the same thing myself. Half the people don't even know my high school has a swim team!!!! Part of the reason people don't think its a sport is that its not on tv and broadcasted like other sports. When most people hear the words swimming they think of lounging around by the pool, floating, and splashing people. Where as in reality its one of the hardest sports there is. When I was at a camp the coach told us about how the collages top wrestler couldn't make it through half of a swim practice. It's really sad how little attention this sport gets.

In some cases, individuals who either downplay or just make negative comments about a subject, sport, event, etc, Cannot perform or achieve a level of excellance, In this case, when people say, "Swimming is not a sport" they probably cannot swim a stroke. That is a FACT.....I do swim, everyday, 2 + hours and Instruct as well as Coach.

Yes i know! Maybe its not the MOST popular but hey its the best, funnest sport ever! Its been scientificly proven that it gives u the best excersize. Swimming is GREAT, u meet new friends, u stay fit, and u have somethin to do other than answerin questions on yahoo and watchin tv. Even if swimming may not b the most popular sport ever, its definitly the best!

Not a sport!!!
Anyone, absolutely ANYONE, who doesn't consider swimming a sport has never tried to swim a mile in heavy surf and do it in anything resembling a reasonable time.
Yeah, I consider it a sport, I wouldn't even try some of the swimming feats about which I have heard.

My son's girlfriend does. She been swimming competively for years.
It's just not something that appeals to the masses, doesn't mean it's not a sport.
I think Polo is goofy but apparently that's a sport.
BTW Maria - I live in Canada as do my son and his girlfriend. What in Gods name does living in the north have to do with not liking swimming. Ever heard of a swimming pool? We have and they're found everywhere.
Both my boys played Baseball, Soccer, Rugby & Basketball, but no hockey.
A truely ignorant answer if ever I saw one.

People make fun of all that speedo stuff because they have too much pride which is sickening. Once they start to swim, then they see how much more of a sport it is than most other ones.

I guess because they don't think it's one of those tough main sports like football, basketball, or soccer. swimming is definitely a sport. i'm a swimmer and i feel offended when someone says that it isn't.

It's even weirder how much gold you see on TV. I don't understand how can anyone watch that. Swimming meets should be on TV more.
