In most states you have paid into a state disability insurance fund (it's part of your state withholding), and thus are entitled to draw from that while you are on maternity leave. You should check into the Family & Medical Leave act; I suspect - though I do not know the law well enough to know with certainty - that your employer is breaching the law.

Either unemployment or disability will offset some of your lost salary, but your employer really should have some provision to allow for at least a portion of your pay while you're out on leave.

I didnt get paid for my maturnity leave either and that was because I had just started a new company and had not yet fininsh my probationary period! You should really read your jobs rules on that! I do know most jobs if you have completed your probation then they are suppose to pay you some of what you make for up to like 6 weeks or something like that. But again you should read up on what are your jobs rules on that! Or talk to the union!

Most companies don't. If you lose your job you can go for unemployment.....if you qualify you get about 6 mo. pay at 66% or so. If you have a good job you would like to keep, you better start saving up now. Get a couple good credit cards and prepare to be in the worse debt of your life, especially if you need to take a lot of time off for cecarian or other complications. Some women that give natural birth are able to return to work quickly. A lady at my job took 8 days, wow! The only other thing would be if you are a single mother, in IL there is something called WIC it gives you certificates for formula, diapers, etc... You also have to qualify with a low income for the WIC program. That is the income you made last year for your tax return I believe.

Just try to not spend too much. Best way to save is to breast feed. It is the best nourishment for your baby and saves some bukku bucks. It amazes me all these women spend thousands on baby clothes and top of the line furniture because they wand the best for their babies and then decide they won't breast feed,,, what has this country come to.

Another thing is try to buy used infant clothes. Infants grow so quickly they usually only fit into an outfit a couple times. So the used outfits are like brand new. And most baby showers people buy clothes for an infant (size 12 mos and smaller) You just don't need that much clothes for an infant. Buy only one or two "newborn" outfits because it will fit for about 8 days only! And maybe 5 for every other size. Don't worry you'll be washing a lot more anyway. Bibs, sheets...etc. all need very frequent washing when you have a baby.

Hope this helps, just a few things I would've like to know before going into all that debt :)

Oh and buy your baby the cutest potty at about 4 months old. So you have it ready. And start sitting him/her on it as soon as they can sit well. Get some good books and take a squat next to him/her. Believe me it will save you thousands! My sister, me and my daughter were all potty trained completely at one. Not to mention the rest of my many cousins.

And don't worry my spell check doesn't work all the time either :)

The family leave act only give you the option to take off but it doesn't say that you have to get paid for it. I guess you better save your vacation and sick days up. Or like everyone says the short term disability but I am sure your company does not have that either if you are not paying for it. I guess try the WIC program for formula and stuff of the baby, or you might have to go right back to work. I am in the same boat, my company only gives you $100 a week.

Disability usually gives leave for maturnity. I know in my state it's a month before the baby is due and three months after. unless there are complications, then it may be longer

the one thing that Pres. Clinton did that was fabulous, the Family Medical Leave Act, while it does not secure you monies...you are not lossing your job.

You can contact the WIC group in you area. it stands for Women, Infants and Children. It is not only for the baby..but for mom as well. You can get food and such, care etc...( so you money doesnt have to go to food).

Also contact local churches as many do offer support
Some of the utilities also have assistance programs..
there may be some leg work involved...but definitely worth doing the work.

Depending on the state you live in, you may qualify for state disability. In CA, state disability pays more then unemployment and it is non-taxable money. In a normal pregnancy, you should qualify for 2-4 weeks before you are due and 4-8 weeks after the baby is born depending on the delivery method.

Check with the EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission)
Do you have short term disability coverage through your employer? You may be able to utilize that while your away. You cannot be fired or let got while on Maternity leave, but not all employers are required to pay an employee while on leave.
