Try these two sites. DELL just announced a recall due some of its laptops "exploding", so I'd check into that first.

Dell is a good source to get a laptop, especially if you want one for under $1,000.
If you open up a computer magazine, or look on the back cover, Dell will often advertise laptops that are between $600-900.
If you only need a basic laptop, and a CD burner, avoid paying more than $750, because the saleman/advertisement will just be trying to sell you extra features that you'll never use.
You can try this E-Value code on Dell for a good $660 laptop
6V620-E1505S1
Or here's a link to the Product Page on Dell:
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?cs=19&kc=6V620&oc=E1505S1&x=8&y=12
Make sure that if you select a laptop from Dell that you avoid choosing all of the other options that they try to sell you, most of it is a waste of money.

Dell has real good deals right now. I just saw a very decente laptop for $300-400. that's not bad. Considering mine was about $1000

I prefer IBM Thinkpads - a good computer store will have refurbished laptops in excellent condition (between $500 and $750).
Lenovo (formerly IBM) makes excellent laptops new, but the cheapest ones are $1,000.

Dell's suck... They'll die right after warranty. Go with a Toshiba. www.toshibadirect.com A bit more pricey than a Dell, but you get what you pay for: Buy a cheap Dell, get a cheaply made computer.
