It is unfortunate but it is true. There is a great divide in ideologies between Western nations and those in Middle East. The reasons for hatred and suspicion are historical- the Wars, the Crusades and the perceived exploitation and injustices of colonial era. Will there never be reconciliation between Syria,Iran (two members of axis of evil as defined by George Bush) and US? There should be as I can surmise from the back channel talks despite arrogant public postures. It looks tragic that in the 21st century with so much at stake, we are still contemplating how regimes can be destabilized instead of thinking of ways to resolve and bring peace and prosperity to mankind as a whole especially in the countries where people are poor exploited and downtrodden!

Well, one has to figure out something first. Do these countries hate us because we have, in the past, supported groups that have tried to overthrow their governments?...or is it something else like self-serving foreign policies, double standards when it comes to energy production (its okay for a democracy like India to have nuclear power, and China can have it as long as they continue to sell us socks at 3 cents a pair, but Iran can't because they don't have anything we want).

There will always be countries that don't like us and we can't always try to get them to. We just have to convince them to not blow us, or any of our friends up and we can't do it by threatening them...that usually just makes people in a weaker position angrier and fight harder and dirtier.

By the way, keep this in mind, from a historical perspective, Western Civilization has been around as long as Islam. Why is it only now (past 40 years) that Islam wants to destroy western civilization?

No. Iran's policies are much more rational than the US's, for example. We should support groups that want to overthrow increasingly authoritarian US governments that commit war crimes with impunity. Iran should be lauded for standing up to the imperialistic US and Israel.

First we must ask if they pose a threat? Second how do the citizens of these countries feel about their leaders? Are they aggressive toward neighboring states? If they are Enemies of USA how can we establish diplomatic relations with these countries? Acting with a policy of "Keeping your friends close and your enemies closer" One mistake USA has made during the last few years has been alienating our friends. Preemptive attack has brought world wide suspicion on USA.

Yes, absolutely. We need to support democratic change in these dictatorial regimes.
