You could try unseating all the connections inside and then plugging them all back in. I'd suggest there is probably something wrong with the drive and needs to be serviced or replaced.

I think there the problem is one of two things. DVD/ CD combo drives have two lasers. One laser is used for playing DVD's and another for the CD's. So, it is possibly to be able to play CD's on a combo drive and not DVD's (i.e. the laser for DVD is broken while the one of the CD is fine.). The laser could have burnt out. The normal life span of a DVD drive is 50,000 - 75,000 hours of use. Or, there is some debris on the laser which is blocking the laser beam. I recommend you purchase a lens cleaner. which you can buy at any computer store, and clean the lens. If this solves the problem then you don't need to do anythings else. If it doesn't work then this is a big problem. If it is still under warranty then you can have the vendor, that sold it to you, try to fix it. A new DVD/ CD combo drive will cost you $25.00 USD at newegg.com. If it isn't under warranty, it would cost you more to try to fix it instead of purchasing a new one.

Could be dirty or defective. If this just started recently, it may just be dirt, you can try to clean it with canned air or a cleaning cd.
If that doesn't work, it's probably defective / broken, so if your laptop is still on warranty, bring it back and get it fixed/replaced.
Toodles.
