Briefly, a layman's condensed account, by me! Because of the huge population, the biggest in the world in fact.
As they were going to have problem feeding everyone, the made it compulsory to limited each couple to one baby.

This may have paid off financially, but not the benefit of zillions of babies, particularly girl babies that have been aborted, or left on the side of the road, or left in Dying Rooms, which are specially constructed for this purpose, according to a documentary I watched a few years back.

If you think that is bad, know that they used to look on daughters as slaves or property to sell.
As its the sons that take on the responsiblity of the care of the elderly parents via his wife of course. Its now proving a problem, because there are not enough girls to go around now, and the girl who are born in the provinces, with the benefit of education are moving into the cities, not wishing to live the traditional live of their mothers. They are heading into the cities, the bright lights, good jobs, and independance. For the first time ever!

Resulting that some girls, married or not, being kidnapped and forced to become some ones wife!

The Government are now realising this, and encouraging some families, particularly farm works, to have a second child, and the government will subsidise them! So almost turned full circle.
Shows what happens when you try to alter nature! huh?

Not sure of the year, must be somewhere between 2O and 25 years ago now, as there are now a lot of desperate batchelors out there.

One of the main problems facing China in recent years is overpopulation. The Chinese government needed to make policies to combat the quickly growing numbers of Chinese citizens. In 1979 the Family Planning Commission of China implemented the One-Child Policy as a solution. The One-Child Policy states that parents in urban settings are limited to having only one child. Parents in rural areas are allowed two children provided the first is a girl.

China is seriously overpopulated. Furthermore, due to the value of the male child over the female, couples would dump or discard or give up their female children in the hopes to have another child that would be male (since they are more valuable and give more honour to the family). Sadly, this all leads to a host of social problems and China is one of the countries in the world where the less children you have, the more tax benefits you get and the easier your life is. Quite sad when you think about how nice it is to have a sibling.
