Opinion survey: Which do you think is more emotionally and psychologically difficult - for a man to get a vasectomy or for a woman to have tubal ligation (getting her "tubes tied")? For that matter, I wonder which is more commonly performed. Do more men or women get "fixed?"

I had a recent Vasectomy and they are pretty painless and it's done often in the doctors office and takes a half hour or less and is less invasive and expensive for a guy. I think if you choose a vasectomy you'll be surprised at how easy it is really and I've had little side effects except very mild pain for a day , plus they do give you pain medication in case you feel the need for it. The cost was only about 510.00 dollars so it's much easier and cheaper for a guy.

It is easier for a man to get a vasectomy, because it is an in office surgery and you can go right back to work the same day, if everything goes ok. But when a woman has tubal ligation done, and doesn't have it after she has given birth, she is not supposed to much of anything for 6 weeks, that is why most women get it done right after giving birth. I think it is getting more common for the male to get fixed, just because it is easier and less expensive.

** It is a lot easier to reverse a vasectomy, if you choose to have another child done the road, a woman has to have surgery all over again to reverse the tubal ligation**

A tubal ligation would be more psychologically difficult mostly because the procedure itself is more physically intrusive. Back in the 70's, more men were getting "fixed" because they wanted to have lots of sex with no responsibility. Now, being "virile" is suddenly popular for men, but more women are having their tubes tied after their 2nd or 3rd child. If you ask me, more men need to start getting fixed because so many of them have no intention of being responsible or paying child support. Let's just get it over with and start fixing all of the losers while they are still in high school. It will probably cut down on that pesky abortion problem.

Women are more common to get "fixed"
I was due to be at the hospital tomorrow morning to get my "tubes tied" but I backed out because just the thought of not being able to get preggy is scary although later in the future you can have it reversed but it cost more money. I'm 26, I have an 8 year old son and a 1 month old daughter. So I would say a woman is more emotionally and psychologically difficult

A vasectomy is definitely easier on a man than a woman having a tubal ligation- physically any way. My husband swore he would have one done after our second child was born. Well, I had a tubal ligation done because I needed a c-section to deliver our twins. (4 kids now) And no he still hasn't had it done.

I think its more emotionally difficult for a man to get a vasectomy but I think men have this procedure done more than woman have tubal ligations.

Vasectomy is the easiest and less invasive. Emotional trauma should not come ino play. If you can't deal with the idea you shouldn't be having kids anyway. I volunteered for the tubal, my husband opted to tak one for the team instead. It was relatively painless and uneventful. I should mention, even though he is 6'3 and covered in tattoos, he's a big baby and if it was bad...THAT bad....he would've had me bringing him chicken soup in bed....newborn attached to my breast or not. He didn't it was fine. That was 6 years ago and I'm sure they've made the process even easier and less painful since then.
Tubals on the other hand...I've had several frienbds get infections at the site and have pain for awhile afterwards.

Comparison is not possible. But I have known both men and women who -- contrary their expectations at the time -- divorced and remarried and regretted. IVF may still be possible, but it's a nuisance, and expensive.

And beware: those who want to ban abortion now, and make it a crime, have an agenda -- an on it is to ban birth control too. And, seemingly, to make having a tubal ligation or a vasectomy a crime. Nunc pro tunc (retroactively)? Don't be so sure it's impossible. Already the USA PATRIOT Act has eroded Constitutional rights; there's much more to be done. . .

Vasectomy is far less invasive and can be done on an outpatient basis. It's also cheaper. For these reasons I think it's more common.

I think it's more emotionally difficiult to keep having accidents than for one of the partners to get fixed. Since it's so much cheaper & easier to do to a man, I feel there's no reason to put a woman through it.

I think that if a couple decides to not have anymore children the women should have a tubal. I know a couple who decided after three children not to have anymore and she made him have a vasectomy. She decided that she no longer wanted to be married to him and divorced him. He now has a girlfriend who he loves and they want to have a baby. Meanwhile the ex is running around like some tramp getting pregnant to every guy and having abortions every time you turn around......sad
