PBS is currently running a series entitled, How Art Made the World. It is hosted by art historian and University of Cambridge lecturer Dr. Nigel Spivey. There's also a book available and probably a DVD set soon.

On the episode "The Day Pictures Were Born," it explored according to the PBS web site:” When and why humans underwent what archeologists call the ‘creative explosion' and began making pictures. “

Now most of us were taught in art History, that the cave paintings were part of a initiation rite or else prehistoric man's attempt to record the history of an event, most likely their hunts.

However the program sheds new light on the paintings based upon understandings from cave paintings of indigenous peoples in South Africa and the American West.

The new findings make more sense. Apparently the shaman (tribal religious leader) went away to a cave, climbing far into the earth, where they went on a vision quest. They were seeking an inner understanding or guidance for themselves and their peoples. The Shaman then recorded his visions and understandings on the cave walls. Thus, to again quote the PBS site, “paintings and the rock art discovered in South Africa and North America indicates that this ‘explosion' may have been an effort to depict sights from the inner - rather than outer - worlds of our ancient ancestors.”

In other words, for their cultures, Mankind's the earliest art was religious in nature. It was inspirational.

Art is the origination of the heart. It is a desire when want to share what you see or what you feel and when you glance at a piece of art you see and feel something from it that the artist wanted to share. You are seeing within a tiny part of the artists mind and maybe even the heart but you will also create your own feelings and own images that could hold an entirely different story to the artist and some images conceal a whole library ;)

I think art originated when man first tried to record the world around him. I'd begin with the Lasceaux Caves in France, as an example. A good historical Humanities book can be an excellent resource.

It may depend somewhat on how you define art, but here are some excerpts from Wikipedia:

The earliest figurine yet discovered came from between 500,000 and 300,000 BC, in Morocco, & is about 6 centimeters long.
Discoveries in Blombos cave, situated in South Africa, date back 70,000 years.
The earliest known European art is from the Upper Palaeolithic period and includes both cave painting, (Altamira & Lascaux) and portable art, such as animal carvings and so-called Venus figurines like the Venus of Willendorf.
The Venus of Berekhat Ram (Israel) and its counterpart in Morocco, the Venus of Tan-Tan, from 800,000 and 220,000 BC, may be the earliest attempts to recreate the human form.
A recent find, the Mask of La Roche-Cotard in France, now suggests that Neanderthal humans may have developed a sophisticated and more complicated artistic tradition.
According to archeological evidence, the Jomon people in ancient Japan were the first to develop pottery, dating to the 11th millennium BC. The Jomon people were making clay figures and vessels decorated with patterns made by impressing the wet clay with braided or unbraided cord and sticks with a growing sophistication.

I don't know about the different languages, but art originated with cavemen painting on walls. Art seems to be one of those things we're compelled to do, whether it's drawing on walls with sticks burnt in the fire, doodling on paperwork when we're supposed to be working, or creating a MasterPiece.

Real art is so beautiful, complete, perfect that you never get tired of it.
Art is creating, God(The creative power) is the first Artist... and we are just imitating, as good as we can. Mozart can be tiring, but never the sound of the wind, or rain... This is the divine Art. If you need the beginning of human art, then start with the beginning of the humanity.

Master is someone who has the knowledge and the skill, but no inspiration. Artist is someone who has inspiration, the skills and the knowledge..And, do not get stuck in the Art of painting, sculpturing or musics... everything can be performed as Art.

I can't believe that you are asking this question, All you have to do is look on the walls in caves, and on rocks, and on big and small mountains, That go back to the very dawn of mankind existence. That is really where art began now I know there are trick answers to this question , but they are just tricks answers and questions, the truth is no country, city or town or village existed when art made it debut. so you can continue lying to yourself or face the true. And yes someone told you that true art began at this or that time period and it was a lie then and it is a lie now...................... True art existed before mankind could dress it self............ I am also surprise at the number of people that believe the crap that you are presenting that true art did not exist before some famous artist.. What a pile of crock..................

Art is only the re-representation of an emotionally evocative icon in a medium. I see a pretty girl, I am moved, I paint an image designed to re-evoke that feeling.

But art, as a practice likely evolved first on cave walls.

Most likely the very first art has not been preserved. Also, most likely, it didn't originate in one place, but in many places. There's probably no knowing what forms it first took. (The caves in France people keep mentioning where not likely the very first art ever, so much as the oldest yet found -- or most famous of early found art.)

Art is the main differnce between humans and animals. It's a simple concept but very important. Only humans are capable of creative thought; ie thought that has nothing to do with survival. I find it difficult at times to differentiate the actions of a person between, instinctual response realting to survival of self or species, and true creative thought. Because, if every brain function that is not directly related to instinct or survival of self or species, is creative thought, then everyone's an artist.
