I'm going to Seattle for the first time to get a feel for the city as I've been told by friends I would really like it. I've lived in CA. most of my life and wished it rained more and love the ocean. I'm staying downtown and don't plan on getting a rental car. Will be seeing the Mariners/Red Sox game and Pikes Market but want to know what a Seattle local would say are the fun things to see and do. Good places to eat too. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I love the Underground Tour in Pioneer Square. It takes you "under" the city and gives a humorous and lively account of the first Seattle residents.

I would also highly recommend that you take a ferry ride across to Bainbridge Island. It's much cheaper than taking an Argosy Cruise and twice as scenic, so bring your camera!

Another suggestion if you like beautiful views is to take the Water Taxi to Alki (leaves from the same Pier as the Argosy Cruise - near Red Robin). One of the best views of the city is found there (as well as the best view of the sunset) and if you take a bus west a few miles (or walk it if you prefer), you'll be in the heart of Alki...where the beach is and where there are some great restaurants.

Of course, you can't go to Seattle without visiting the Space Needle. Going up for a drink, as suggested above might be tricky, as you usually need reservations and from what I understand, there is a $25/per person minimum. But, it's a beautiful view from the top on a clear day...and Seattle Center itself is lively and the International Fountain is beautiful.

Hope you have an enjoyable trip!!!

See the flying fish at Pikes Place Market. If you go to the Space Needle here is a trick. Go the the restaurant at the top and have a drink. The cost is less than the observation deck.
