No no no no no. don't open their letters! No man, don't you have one ounce of respect for your child? C'mon. I mean, what kind of stuff are you expecting to find? Porn? Dangerous reading material? If this is not the case, do what you can to stop and asap. Really, I used to have a box where I kept my letters, christmas cards, a photo of a boy I liked, a diary with my "deepest darkest secrets" when I was 12 and it was a special and secret refuge I could go to when I needed to escape my younger sibling, mom and pops. Really, stop opening up their mail and just let them have their own young adult space. If you have any serious concerns you should start by asking them about the letters and not opening them before you know somethign suspicious is going on. Good luck

You should never open a childs mail. As long as he/she is able to do it for themselves, let them do it. If they do not understand some of the words, they will ask you what it says anyway. Sounds to me like you have already inadvertantly taught your child negative trust values. Sorry.
Better late than never though , next letter that comes through, put in on the breakfast, tea table at their place, and leave them to it. Stop being over protective, let the poor child breath. Good luck.

Choice is yours but beware your child will be lost to you sooner if you pry into things they dont want you to know .
Why not stop now and enjoy your child for as long as possible because much of the journey between childhood and being an adult would horrify a parent (if they knew) but is in any case perfectly normal .

Never! Parenting does'nt stop just because your kids get older. Privacy for teens is highly overrated! I have five between the ages of 17 & 12!!

If you know all your child's friends and contacts and their writing and post mark areas... why are you opening the mail?
If you have a reason to concern yourself with his/her contacts, you are wise to keep abreast of incoming mail... but should be overlooking... not opening first... you should be able to monitor with control, by conversation and openness, your child will proffer information... enough for you to know he/she is safe... you afford little information which merely provokes the "Invasion of privacy" brigade to jump in... but as any caring parent knows, that aint necessarily how life is.
We do have and should constantly maintain... a parental duty, to know who, where, when, why, what... exactly is going on in our underage children's lives, because they can so easily be at risk from predators today!
I'm for KNOWING and not wishing we knew after the event!
Much experienced parent of six adult kids... safely grown and gone:-)

At the age of 1 if you wish to encourage trust and respect! Are you a really bad control freak? Coz kids really grow up to resent that!

You should let them do it anyway,
you could ask them what it is when they open it.
13 year olds post normally just consists of appoinments and letters from friends etc
