In modern usage, the term redneck predominantly refers to a particular stereotype of individuals living in Appalachia, the Southern United States, the Ozarks, and later the Rocky Mountain States. The word can be used either as a pejorative or as a matter of pride, depending on context.

Usage of the term "Redneck" generally differs from Hick and Hillbilly, because Rednecks reject or resist assimilation into the dominant culture, while Hicks and Hillbillies theoretically are isolated from the dominant culture. In this way, the term Redneck is similar to the word Cracker.

The states they live in are:

Mississippi
Alabama
Tennessee
Georgia
N.Carolina
S.Carolina
Louisiana
Oklahoma
Texas
Kentucky
Colorado
Arizona
Idaho
Montana

I hate to break it to you, but they're EVERYWHERE! I've lived in Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Washington, Colorado, Michigan and Ohio (currently). They're just as thick north of the Mason Dixon Line as they are to the south of it. I won't split hairs by trying to differentiate between "red necks" and "white trash" but I really was surprised to find so many good ole boys and girls in Michigan and Ohio. Frankly, I'm glad their population is so dense around here. It means that there are now three different chain restaurants near by that serve "SWEET TEA"! *giggle*
