It's known as phantom pain. Phantom because the limb's not there anymore, pain because the amputee can feel tremendous pain where the limb was. Some people can be affected for a short time while other can suffer for months afterwards.

underlying the physical body is an etheric "energetic " matrix which supports and energizes the physical. since it itself is not physical it can not be amputated. my intuition is that some fairly sensitive people can still sense the energetic component of the amputated limb. that equals the phantom limb. it's not "delusional"; it's perfectly real in another dimension. since most western medical types are just as clueless as most westerners generally about the various "layers" which comprise a human being---a physical one, and numerous non physical ones, they label the unknown in a fashion such as this. the nonphysical components have been known to oriental medicine, and other non western practices (labelled primitive by the west) for thousands of years. what's "phantom" to the oriental mind is the wisdom level of westerners on many levels. :-)
