The test is used for pre-employment screening, and post accident investigation. The saliva test usually tests for THC, narcotics, amphetamines, and alcohol. The test is not as reliable as the urine test, due to it's lack of ability to detect trace amounts for light/casual users.

I've never had a mouth swab for drug testing, it's simply not a reliable test if there is one. I'd be a bit suspicious actually of a mouth swab test that wasn't for DNA.

Drug tests are usually blood and/or urine. Those are the ONLY reliable testing methods for drug use/abuse.

The test is done because your saliva can be tainted by any drugs you're taking.

It can do a search for most of the common drugs, like marijuana and heroin, and tests for current use, because drugs in the saliva are a sign of very recent use.

The link below will take you to a manufacturer's website that shows one of the testing machines and what it tests for.
