I really do not get this question because if you just subtract 3 from 7.80 you get 4.80 which is not 3 less than what tim spent on lunch the 4.80 is 3 less than the whole total they spend together. So 4.80 is not 3 less than what tim spent it is 3 less than the total they spent over all. I do not know how to get 3 less than what tim spent if the total between bob and tim is 7.80. I would need to know what tim spend on lunch by him self.

Tim is x. Bob is x-3. The sum of the two is 7.80. Write that last one as an equation. Solve for x. That's Tim. Subtract 3 to get Bob.

If you mean $3 less, then this is the answer:

Bob = x
Tim = (x + 3)

x + (x + 3) = $7.80
2x + 3 = $7.80
2x = $4.80
x = $2.40

Bob spent $2.40

If you mean 3 Cent less, then this is the answer:

Bob = x
Tim = (x + 3)

x + (x + 0∙03) = $7∙80
2x + 0∙03 = $7.80
2x = $7.80 - 0∙03
2x = $7.77
x = $3∙885

Bob spent $3∙885

Let the amount Tim paid be x
and that Bob paid be x - 3
According to the question the total amount paid is $ 7.80
Therefore,
x + (x - 3) = 7.80
2x - 3 = 7.80
2x = 7.80 + 3
2x = 10.80
x = 10.80 / 2
x = 5.40
Therefore , Tim paid $ 2.40 for his lunch.
Hence Bob paid $ 7.80 - 5.40 = $2.40 for his lunch.

Let x = Tim's lunch expense
And both lunches add up to 7.80... (Bob's lunch is just x - 3)

This is expressed mathematically as below...

x + (x-3) = 7.80

2x - 3 = 7.80

2x = 10.80

x = 5.40

x-3 = 2.40

so Bob spent $2.40

and Tim spent $5.40

Bob = x + 3 (to equal Tim)
T= 7.80
x + 3 = 7.80
x = 7.80 - 3
x = 4.80
Bob spend $4.80

If by "3 less" you mean "$3 less", then:

B=T-3
T=B+3

B+T=7.80

Combining...
B+(B+3)=7.80
2B+3=7.80
2B=4.80
B=2.40

...so Bob spent $2.40 for his lunch (and Tim paid $5.40).

2006-08-15 13:32:32 · answer #8 · answered by stellarfirefly 3 · 0 0

B + T = 7.80
B = T - 3

(T -3) + T = 7.80
2T = 10.80
T = 5.40

B = 5.40 - 3
B = 2.40
