The term "Olympiad," from which the Olympics derived, means an interval of four years - it's a word the Greeks used to measure time.

The Greeks held their games once every Olympiad, hence the modern Games being spaced that way. This also explains why the 1906 Athens Olympics are now considered "unofficial," since they fell between the "real" games.

It has something to do with the ancient Greek's study of astronomy, believe it or not. The planet Venus (who the Greeks worshiped as the goddess Aphrodite, who represented perfection, beauty and love) traces a pentagram (five pointed star) in the sky every eight years. The Greeks based their calender on it, and divided the calender into two 4 year periods. The Olympics were held when the sun and the moon were strong, which was during a full moon in the summer months. The Summer Olympics like we know them today are on a four year schedule, and the Winter Olympics are in the years between the Summer Olympics. The Winter Olympics were added sometime after the start of modern Olympics.

The summer season Olympics are held each 4 years and the iciness Olympics are held each 4 years. The iciness Olympics have been moved so as that they might fall in different years than the summer season Olympics. the subsequent 2 iciness Olympics would be in 2010 and 2014. the subsequent 2 summer season Olympics would be in 2012 and 2016.

As far as I know...because in beginning, travel was not as fast and easy as today's. In today's games, it takes so much time to chose and prepare (with all the construction and so forth) that they need the four years. Usually a country is selected at a minimum of 6 years prior to hosting a game.

the ancient greeks considered 4 an auspicious number, and thus chose a 4 year gap (which they coined as "olympiad") to separate the ancient olympic games. this tradition was continued through the ages.
