from what i see people keep on talking about this matter
http://cutepiggy.com/full_disclosure_project.html,
over and over again. some think we are the only ones on this planet and in this universe, some they say some other creatures are living here as well (i'm talking about aliens here).
So, why is this so captivating?
in my own opinion aliens are a bad thing and i hope they're not among us. Let me know what you think.

existing of alien, has been always captivating. because the universe is too big and there are infinity of planets in the universe.
So I thing there should be some aliens.
but the probability of advanced civilization(which you don't like it) depends on several factors. In 1961 American scientist, frank drake, created an equation which determines how many advanced civilizations there are in our galaxy:
N=N*(fp)(ne)(fl)(fi)(fc)(fL)
that means the number of advanced civilization in our galaxy equals:
number of stars in milky way, times to
fraction of stars that have planets around them, times to
number of planets that are capable of sustaining life, times to:
fraction of planets in Ne(number of planets that are capable...) where life involves, times to:
fraction of Fl(fraction of planets in Ne) where intelligent life involves, times to:
the fraction of Fi(fraction of Fl) that communicate times to:
fraction of planet's life during which the communicating civilization live.
so you can estimate how many advanced civilization are there in our galaxy.

Au contraire, I think "Men in Black" was very amusing and had some interesting cosmological ideas (especially at the end, where aliens are playing marbles inside of which a whole galaxy existed). These ideas are "captivating" because our window to the universe keeps opening wider -- we've come a long way since Ptolemy, who tried to keep the Church happy by coming up with his "wheels within wheels" theory of orbiting bodies to make sure that his ideas still conformed to the prevailing dogma that everything revolves around the Earth and that stars were put in the night sky by God "for our amusement." That sure doesn't explain the trillions of galaxies out there -- you can't even see them without a powerful telescope. Let your imagination flow.

Such things are not very captivating to genuinely intelligent people, except for the entertainment value in watching other people led by the nose by religions, mysticism, aliens and various conspiracy obsessions. It is comical at the least.

As for myself, I do not favour beliefs that extend too far beyond supportive facts. There is no worthy reason for doing so.

There seems to be a human tendency to want a mystical side to life. If there isn't one, then they will invent one just to put themselves in the centre of their idea of the universe.

If not religion, then it's space aliens, talking to dead people or some other such mystery tripe to fill the void in their lives.

Each fills the same psychological 'need'.

Intelligence is, in part, characterized by having no need to invent mysteries or religions to fill a fantasized psychological void and challenging such beliefs for validity before accepting them. If not, then how do we differentiate between an intelligent person and a fool?

Perhaps this is why the greater the mystic aspects of a society, the more backwards, primitive and savage that society is with respect to those that have abandoned that nonsense more than others.

There is an apparent obsession with the need to feel that the whole universe was made exclusively for us and whoever wants to believe that will listen to no other argument to the contrary.

Some people can only feel secure hiding behind beliefs they fully know cannot be disproved. Anything that can actually be challenged and tested for validity and possibly disproven, is something they don't dare believe in. Such people cannot find any security in the real world, only in the fantasies they desperately cling to.

It's one thing to believe in something and quite another to have valid foundations for that belief that stand up to the light of reason.

Aliens are out there or will be out there. under the surface of jupitor's moon europa there is water and therefor most likely bateria, which is the foundation of all life. They just need to evolve. We would need to check everywhere for water so we could keep track of whether or not they were good or bad or would attack us, so that if they were bad and attacked us we could fight yet another war and win, then interogate them about their sociates, cultures and ways of life.
I think it would be wonderful if the bacteria started evolving and we went and interacted with the aliens and became their friends. The kids could have pen pals on a different planet or another galexy!

I think discovering alines is a really good thing. At least we would know IF they attack, we would be ready. However, I think they will try to cooperate with us and we should too.
