I'm torn on the subject. Whereas there is no ball (not even a puck or stone) involved, cheerleaders have to keep their bodies in athletic shape to perform as they do (a good squad that is.) Cheerleaders definitely sustain injuries that require the same medical expertise as any player injured in a full-contact sport.
People can get a cheerleading scholarship to colleges.
But something inside me still rebels at calling it a full fledged sport. Since that something is probably just machismo, than my intellectual side would have to say that "yes" cheerleading is a sport.

Yes. I'm a freshmen cheerleader, and let me tell you: it's a lot harder than it looks. You have to be in great shape to be a cheerleader. At tryouts, we had to run 2 miles every day, then do 200 crunchs and like 75 push-ups. No joke. Then we'd go inside, do jumps, stunts, and tumble. People who say it's not a sport are the ones who have no athletic ability and they should just shut their mouths.
God. It is so ******* annoying how people say that cheerleaders are stupid, too. We have to ace 5 out of seven classes or we'll get kicked off. And you know what??? Do you WANT to know why we're called cheerleaders??? It's because the effing crowd doesn't know what to do when there's a game. So people who think cheer isn't a sport, get a life.

YES! ok dont even get me started, well if you are talking about competetive cheerleading yes, the whole "spirt game squad thing" no. I did competetive cheerleading for 5 years and it is deff a sport, you have to be agile, strong, flexible, and have a lot of stamina. If you dont believe me try doing one of those routines! Also you have to be able to throw your body backwards into the air (which takes just a "little" bit of skill) and everyday before practice we would run 5 miles and 2 after practice. And do you know how hard it is to fly?? You have to hold your own weight like 2 stories in the air while only being supported at your ankle and you cant move at all! Also during the whole routine you have to be extremly tight and make sure every motion is really crips. Plus do you know how hard it is to count in your head while thinking of what move comes next and remebering to smile constantly?!? And if your grades drop you get kicked off, sounds like a sport to me. For all those people who say no turn on espn one day and look for real cheerleading, Ive seen it on there before, you prob havent been to a cheerleading competetion before or you would know its a sport, also the reason a lot of cheerleaders are bitter is because people always stereotype them as mean little brats which a lot of them arent, its just when you're at practice basically 24/7 you get really close with all the girls and they become your best friends so if you talk **** about one of them you got the whole squad after you. It's kind of hard to understand unless you've done it. Also the injuries are right up there with other sports, I've broken my collar bone, sternum, wrist both arms, and my ankle.

My dictionary defines sport--an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature. (No mention of balls) Cheer leading encompasses all these. I was a cheerleader and (just as the guys were there with their teammates to win the game) I was there with my teammates to be part of the best cheer leading squad. Just because you guys are only seeing T&A doesn't mean there isn't more going on. When I watch football I'm thinking a lot less about the pigskin and a lot more about the buns on those running backs. Hmmm...maybe football isn't really a sport?

YES! I'm a dancer and thinking about doing cheerleading. I hate it when people say dancing isn't a sport. We do a LOT more push-ups and sit-ups than most sports and it's harder than it looks. Cheerleading is a lot of hard work too. It needs to be appreciated and I think it is a sport.

NO. Cheerleaders never grow up. They stay mean little spiteful girls who still, after 30 years can't seem to get out of the High School bullying mentality.
It's funny, I can spot a cheerleader miles away.

Nothing that is only won based of of the votes from judges is a sport. They are athletic activities that someone is doing better than someone else, but not a Sport.

No I don't consider cheer leading a sport. They do take part in competition, but so do debaters. Please stay away from soccer games, they are just appreciated in Red Neck games like American style football, where most of the entertainment comes from outside the game.
