I have to admit I was Very tempted to pick Sir Garreth's answer. However I felt that Sam got closer to what I was trying to get at in my question? Does my cat have a theory of mind? Or more specifically does he have a theory of my mind? As a predator he seems to demonstrate the value of concealing himself from his pray. My Dad's cat used to hide under sheets of newspaper to stalked pigeons in the street. Was he consciously decieving the pigeon? and thus did he have an idea of the pigeons false belief? I'm quite sure my Cat doesn't know what I'm thinking, but does he think he knows what I'm thing?

Thanks for your responses I enjoyed reading them.

Your cat wont have a sense of self nor will he understand your eye movements.
But on a lower level he may, for survival, be able to realise you are looking without you following it up with further body language.
Dogs learn to look into human eyes even though they don't do it to other dogs. They know we like it and they mimic us to make us happy

He is aware of your presence but it is your smell that he responds to. If your cat is sitting at the window, and you are outside (assuming you dont live higher than ground level, other wise you would be at serious risk of death!) go to the window to say hello - he will not recognise you.

Huh.....that's a good question...I'm guessing because of a cat's highly advance sensory system, that he is not only aware of you looking at you, he knows, can smell you seeing him, and a whole bunch of other stuff that we're not aware of.

Not only does he know that you're looking at him, but he knows what mood you're in, what behaviors of his are likely to annoy you, what time you generally feed him, etc. Cats have no grasp of language, but their social intelligence is pretty advanced.

Cats react to their experience with you, so if you talk to them while looking at them then they associate looking with communication.
